Hey Barrie! So glad you mentioned the root meaning of the word. I looked it up and came up with:

The word comes from the late Greek σαρκασμός (sarkasmos) taken from the word σαρκάζειν meaning ‘to tear flesh, gnash the teeth, speak bitterly’.[9]

Very good definition.

Thank you Kat for yet another inspired message. I have long been trying to teach and exemplify this in my home. Two weeks ago I made a point of having a family home evening lesson about it. I read from a talk by one of our church leaders and had my family read and explain several scriptures. I now have Ephesians 4:29-32 printed and taped to the mirror in my girls’ bathroom. By the way, one thing I learned in preparing to give the lesson to my family was that the word sarcasm comes from a latin (or greek, can’t remember which) root word that means “a strip of flesh”. That is a very good description of what it feels like when someone is sarcastic with us!

Right on! Our speech reflects the state of our heart (“for out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks”, Matt. 12:34) Foul language and belittling speech (often excused as “just joking”) do not befit followers of Christ. We as parents need to check all area of our lives to see what kind of examples we are setting. Our children are little mirrors of who/what we really are. Nothing comes back to us quicker than our attitudes and our speech.
